  • Hash Brown with Turkey Gravy

    hash-brown-turkey-breakfast

We hope you had some time to rest and some time to spend with loved ones and we hope it was spent with amazing food.

    hash-brown-with-gravy

I’ve currently got a bit of the post Thanksgiving blues. Soon it won’t be acceptable to spend my day in sweatpants and eat plates of turkey and pies. My favorite holiday is over and my stash of leftovers is quickly diminishing. Before I gobble everything up, I want to share a quick breakfast recipe with you that involves Thanksgiving leftovers. • Butternut Squash Soup

    butternut-squash-soup

Without getting too wordy about this, let me just say that it’s been a long week but I’ve had some time to think and keeping silent now seems impossible and irresponsible. I feel disconnected from my country and home at the moment. I worry for myself, my family, my friends, and people across this divided country. I don’t know what the next four years will be like, but I am hopeful. Maybe this is the wakeup call we all needed.

  • Zucchini Leek Fritters

    zucchini-fritters-2

I am officially in hoodie and thick sweatpants mode and I love it. It’s like being wrapped by a thick reliable pillow 24/7. Good lounge wear is like the understanding boyfriend I never had. My gray hoodie and pajama bottoms are simultaneously my Netflix and cooking uniform. When in doubt, wear neutral colors.

With my cooking uniform on, it finally feels cool enough that standing next to a pan of hot oil before frying up something crispy actually sounds appealing. Besides, my thick gray uniform keeps the sizzling oil away from my skin. Netflix/food uniform/PJs/cooking armor – check it. (more…)

  • Stuffed Ricotta Squash Blossoms

    Stuffed Squash Blossoms

I don’t think I’ve been this excited about a new recipe in a long time. Don’t get me wrong, I love all my babies but this one is really something special.

    Cheesy Squash Blossoms

I started being more conscious of my health and what I ate three summers ago – this is when I started running and finally decided to check out the farmers’ market. I don’t want to be dramatic here but it was life changing and it has been an ongoing journey since. (more…)

  • Peach Watermelon Caprese

    Peach Watermelon Caprese

I’m calling it – I’ve officially melted into the hot concrete in the hot city streets of Boston. I am frying like an egg and for the first time in my life, I don’t like that egg. Figuratively speaking. I’d be a weird little egg, especially fried.

All yolks aside, this heat wave is not doing me any favors. I can not run in this weather. It’s impossible to breathe and move around in this humidity. And like a true Bostonian, I know I’ll complain about the cold and wish for summer in just a few short months. By the way, I am not sorry for that yolk joke – I’m quite proud of it actually. This heat wave is not taking away my funnies.

  • Chicken Cabbage Dumplings

    Chicken Dumplings Chopsticks

Independence Day is finally upon us but fear not – there are no aliens coming to destroy Earth. Sorry, I just saw the film for the first time recently and I had to reference it somewhere.

    Chicken Dumplings Final 2

Aliens aside, are you guys prepared for our country’s birthday? I’m sure you are all stocked up on alcohol, sunscreen, and good company.  I also hope you’re all stocked up on food if you’re hosting, because that’s the only thing that matters – food and fireworks. For me, the best thing about parties are the appetizers; I would happily snack on appetizers all day. (more…)

  • Honey Soy Shishito Peppers

    Shishito Final

I’m gonna keep this one short and sweet – partly because it’s way past my bedtime as I am writing this and partly because this recipe is so easy and requires so little effort that you’re going to hop off the couch and make this immediately afterwards.

    Shishito Finger

After a couple of hot yoga classes and several attempts to get back into running, my mind and body are trying to make healthier decisions. When spring is bringing in ramps and other colorful items, it’s actually not hard at all. For this vegetable recipe, I’ve got shishito peppers to inspire your next round of grocery shopping. (more…)

  • Soft Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread

    whole wheat sandwich bread

    I live for Sundays.

And I know you do too. Don’t lie. We lazy-folk take pride in our ability to put our feet up any chance we get, and we work hard to do things the easy way.

    browned butter
There will always be errands to run or parades to parade. But when Sunday rolls around, all I ever really want to do is sleep in well past nine o’clock and spend the day re-watching Game of Thrones. And then all that other stuff becomes instantly unappealing. (more…)

  • Spring Veggie Couscous with Lemon Herb Dressing

    Veggie Couscous Writing

I’ve been waiting for this for months – next weekend, we get to wind the clocks forward and hold onto daylight a smidgen longer. No matter how old I am or where I am in my life, the day that we gain an extra hour of sun is still a very special day to me and brings with it a feeling of hope that is sometimes lost in the winter.

    Veggie Couscous 2

That one extra hour of daylight is everything I need to feel new again. I feel more motivated to run, eat well, and rest with the knowledge that spring is just a few blossoms away. Every spring seems different as I get older – I set new goals each spring before summer arrives. I set the goal to learn a new skill or come back to an old one each year. The warmer temperatures will also bring fresh local produce again. This time, I’m getting inspired early. (more…)

  • 5 Steps for Beginner Bread Baking

    pizza dough before

Making homemade bread is way easier than it’s made out to be.

Really. With just a few ingredients, very little hands-on time, and such a forgiving subject, making bread is technically easier than whipping up a batch of cookies. I’m here to tell you that no matter what bread recipe you want to use, you can play around with it and tailor it to get exactly the results you want.

And if you’ve never made bread before, hopefully this will assuage your fears.

    Let’s dig in. (more…)
