I like to pretend that I’m hard-working and up for any challenge, especially when it comes to this blog of mine. But it’s been three years now, and you deserve the truth: I’m really just a big ol’ lazy bum. (more…)

Roasted Chickpeas
Is it me or are new healthy snacks popping up everywhere? It used to just be kale chips but now I see crispy snap peas and chia snacks lined in stores. Healthy snacks seem to be the new healthy.
When watching my beauty YouTubers, I’ve also noticed this trend, but one snack has stuck out and I keep seeing recommendations pop up. This new sensation is roasted chickpeas, which seems to have temporarily replaced the beloved hummus. I was fascinated by it and wanted to try it myself. It is certainly healthy and seems effortless to make. (more…)

Nutty Olive Oil Granola
This week, I will be officially graduating from college. After six long years. I have to keep reminding myself that this is real life.
School has taken me more time to finish than it does most people, partly because I took a break to work at Flour Bakery, and partly because I’m really (really) not perfect. But graduation is finally here, and I am now facing a completely unplanned future; feeling simultaneously terrified and thrilled. Real world, here I come.
But before I can get to my future, I just know I’m going to trip over myself as I cross the stage. For some reason I’ve decided to wear wedge heels, when I could probably count on two hands the number of times I’ve actually worn high heels out and about. Even without heels, my coordination is no better than a donkey walking a tight rope, and it doesn’t help that I’ll have all of Harvard’s eyes on me. I’m glad my parents will be there to photograph the exact moment that I stumble on my gown, so I can share it with all of you and prove to you that I am not exaggerating – I really am that clumsy. Bacon Brussels Sprout Pasta Salad
Guys, I’ve been very bad lately and shopping and spending like Carrie Bradshaw in a Manolo Blahnik store. Except I don’t actually have that kind of dough, but I still find myself feeling extremely guilty whenever I check my bank account. I’m being a bad influence on Leili, too, but at least I’ll look fly while being an enabler. As my best friend Peter says, “I’m a baller on a budget.”
To compensate my recent spending habits, I made a pact with myself to stop getting take out. That means no more sushi deliveries at 11PM. And I am glad to report I’ve been pretty good with this new compromise. To add to that, I’m finally in my exercise groove again and I’m making healthy meals for myself. They don’t teach you this in school, but sometimes irresponsible spending leads to healthier habits, because no money, no takeout. (more…)

Avocado Toast – Three Ways
Happy Monday everyone! I know – it’s the least favorite day of the week, but it’s a great excuse for lots of coffee, right? Actually I’m still pretty tired from Game of Thrones last night. Ned Stark, am I right?
But I should get my mind back to reality and Monday. As much as I dislike the first day of the work week and as much as I love to whine about it, I always like to remind myself that it’s a good time to make productive and possibly healthy plans for the week. Monday is essentially a reset button for weekly goals and a pep talk with my belly. (more…)

Honey Soy Shishito Peppers
I’m gonna keep this one short and sweet – partly because it’s way past my bedtime as I am writing this and partly because this recipe is so easy and requires so little effort that you’re going to hop off the couch and make this immediately afterwards.
After a couple of hot yoga classes and several attempts to get back into running, my mind and body are trying to make healthier decisions. When spring is bringing in ramps and other colorful items, it’s actually not hard at all. For this vegetable recipe, I’ve got shishito peppers to inspire your next round of grocery shopping. (more…)

Chocolate Walnut Cupcakes with Blackberry Buttercream
I’ve come to realize that I am a bundle of contradictions.

Scallion Ginger Pesto Pasta
Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Leili and I love pesto! Ok, it’s no secret that we like to play around and reinvent ways to create this delicious green sauce. I mean, who wouldn’t? It’s fresh, adaptable, and goes with everything. This ginger scallion version is no different.

Spring Veggie Couscous with Lemon Herb Dressing
I’ve been waiting for this for months – next weekend, we get to wind the clocks forward and hold onto daylight a smidgen longer. No matter how old I am or where I am in my life, the day that we gain an extra hour of sun is still a very special day to me and brings with it a feeling of hope that is sometimes lost in the winter.
That one extra hour of daylight is everything I need to feel new again. I feel more motivated to run, eat well, and rest with the knowledge that spring is just a few blossoms away. Every spring seems different as I get older – I set new goals each spring before summer arrives. I set the goal to learn a new skill or come back to an old one each year. The warmer temperatures will also bring fresh local produce again. This time, I’m getting inspired early. (more…)

Pan Seared Salmon
Have you guys seen the movie Her? If not, then allow me to give you a brief breakdown. In a not too distant future, a man falls in love with his phone’s female operating system. I’m not capturing what the movie is really about in that previous sentence, but please watch the film. It’s funny, heartwarming, uplifting, heartbreaking, and hopeful. Her stays with you long after the credits are done rolling; this movie hits hard for Leili and me.
For those of you who have seen it, you may remember the beach scene with the armpit anatomy bit. Shortly after that funny break comes a beautiful piece of music that the girl (computer) writes for the boy (human) about their day at the beach. That piano piece is equally sweet and sentimental as it is sad.
