  • Spring Veggie Couscous with Lemon Herb Dressing

    Veggie Couscous Writing

I’ve been waiting for this for months – next weekend, we get to wind the clocks forward and hold onto daylight a smidgen longer. No matter how old I am or where I am in my life, the day that we gain an extra hour of sun is still a very special day to me and brings with it a feeling of hope that is sometimes lost in the winter.

That one extra hour of daylight is everything I need to feel new again. I feel more motivated to run, eat well, and rest with the knowledge that spring is just a few blossoms away. Every spring seems different as I get older – I set new goals each spring before summer arrives. I set the goal to learn a new skill or come back to an old one each year. The warmer temperatures will also bring fresh local produce again. This time, I’m getting inspired early. (more…)

  • Vegan Matcha Cake

    Matcha Loaves
Well, it looks like we just had our first blizzard of 2016. Hopefully this will be the only one of this winter because walking to work for the next few days will neither be fun nor fast. Hopefully it doesn’t turn too icy either. I once fell on my butt twice within minutes of each fall and it left a huge bruise on my right side. Perhaps I’m just complaining about walking.

Anyway, I hope you guys are staying warm out there with plenty of layers and hot chocolates. January is almost over and spring is hopefully not too far away. I will be going to New York this weekend and I’m crossing my fingers for clear skies and mild temperatures. If not, then I’ll just whine some more. (more…)

  • Curry Potato Leek Soup

    Curry Potato Leek Soup Final

Happy Happy New Year! First of all, I hope you all had a wonderful time welcoming 2016 – I did it the old fashioned way by enjoying a bittersweet dinner at West Bridge’s last service and seeing Star Wars and being in bed before midnight rang out. Crazy stuff.

Secondly, why is Boston so cold all of a sudden? It was over 60 degrees on Christmas Eve and I actually wore a dress. One week later and I’m bundled up in my wool coat and boots whenever I can summon the energy to go outside and pray I don’t get blown away by the sharp winds. My body and closet are equally confused by the hot and cold temper of Mother Nature. Literally. (more…)

  • Roasted Vegetable Medley with Cranberries

    Roasting Pan

Hello darling friends, I must apologize for the laziness that is lying ahead in this post.

In the midst of planning my family’s Thanksgiving dinner, I got a bit carried away into marshmallow heaven and realized I’d forgotten to add some fiber to the dinner. Perhaps you guys are having this issue as well. This recipe is a quick but delicious attempt to fix that problem.

    Pan Motion

Honestly, I admire the simplicity of this recipe – everything from the turkey and gravy to the mashed potatoes to the buttery desserts can be overwhelming. I lied, they’re all delicious and dreamy but sometimes I just want a balance on my favorite holiday so I can feel less ashamed about inhaling everything else on the dinner table. (more…)

  • Soaked Oats with Grilled Peaches

    Peaches and Oats

I’m not good about breakfast – I know it’s supposedly the most important meal of the day, but dinner stole my heart a long time ago. I appreciate a good, heavy breakfast on the weekends but I usually prefer something light and quick. Mornings are tough enough as it is without added pressure from a breakfast routine. My weekday routine is usually me yanking my bag and flying out the door to work.

    Almond Milk

Naturally, I like to do everything at night – including breakfast preparations. For several weeks now, I have been soaking oats at night and eating them at work the next day. It’s the perfect chilled breakfast on a summer morning. This jar of soaked goodness is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. (more…)

  • Miso Roasted Vegetables

    Miso Roasted Veggies

Do you hear that? August is here and the slow race to autumn has begun. Gradually, the shift in summer attitudes becomes increasingly obvious – light jackets, talk of Labor Day, and warmer beverages. For my sake, let’s hang on to the summer celebrations a little longer.

    Local Vegetables

There are still plenty of fresh vegetables and barbecues to be consumed. It’s been a busy but wonderful summer – Leili went to Europe to fulfill her food dreams and we celebrated our blog’s first birthday this year. This recipe is one of the final salutes to summer of 2015. (more…)

  • Chocolate Ice Cream & Fudge Sauce {Vegan}

vegan ice cream bowlAll I need in this life of sin is a few heaping scoops of creamy chocolate ice cream. It fits into any occasion; at any time of day – it’s perfect for elevensies, a summer afternoon snack, or some late-night stress eating after last week’s Game of Thrones finale. (I don’t want to talk about it. I just can’t even.)

But as I’ve mentioned before, I can’t eat ice cream without feeling icky afterward. Lactose intolerance is just a cruel joke. The good news, which took me way too long to discover, is that there’s a solution to this dilemma. And if you give it a chance, you’ll see what all the fuss is about. (more…)

  • Sesame Veggie Soba

    Sesame Veggies

Despite a little wind and a few sprinkles here and there, spring has finally made its way into New England. No more snow, and days that only grow longer and longer until summer.

    Veggie Soba

I’m ready to jump into my sandals and race to the park for a picnic. In another week or so, I’ll also be racing to the farmers’ market to browse this season’s green offerings. There is no greater joy for me than celebrating the warm seasons with fresh produce and healthy living.

  • Blueberry Basil Salad

    salad plate

I have an insatiable sweet tooth.

blueberries1Over the years, I’ve experimented with putting sweet things where they didn’t quite belong. No one questioned a spoonful of sugar in tomato sauce, or a drizzle of honey on some oven roasted veggies, but I definitely raised some eyebrows when I put chocolate on a sausage and cheese pizza…more than once. (It was delicious, but haters gonna hate). Luckily, I don’t have to go putting chocolate in salads too, because nature’s got its very own sweet stuff.

    I’m talking about fruit, guys.

  • Caramelized Onion Pasta Sauce

    pasta egg
My absolute favorite thing to do in the kitchen isn’t just to bake or cook, or even eat (gasp!). What I truly love to do is to experiment. Sorry Mom, but I just really love to play with my food.

Because really, creating new recipes is so much fun. It’s a chance to channel your inner mad scientist. When I’m working on a recipe, I tweak one thing, try it again, take notes, tweak another thing, take more notes, cackle victoriously, tweak tweak tweak, eat eat eat. By the end I’m usually covered in butter and ready for a nap, but hopefully I’ve at least learned something new and created something delicious. Experimenting with baking is easier to me because all the ratios of ingredients can only be changed in certain ways, so I have more control over everything.
